A History Of Home Security Systems

The history of home security systems goes back to the mid-19th century. Edwin Holmes, a New England businessman, purchased a patent titled "Improvement in Electromagnetic Alarms" from a man named Augustus R. Pope. Holmes is generally regarded as the inventor of the burglar alarm.

Holmes took his patent to New York City, where break-ins were increasing and plenty of people could actually afford what Holmes wanted to sell. His home security system was quite primitive compared to that of today. They involved wires and magnetic contacts that would eventually cause a bell to ring if opened, and these were fitted into windows and doors. New York City proved to be a great place for Holmes's business to succeed, and he continued to improve his burglar alarm systems throughout his life.

He was also famous for developing one of the first storage safes to be sold on the market; what made his safe unique was it featured a wire connection that, if the alarm was triggered, would reach the police immediately. The alarm was also silent, which prevented a thief from knowing whether or not it had been set off.

The art and business of home security have certainly come a long way in the century-and-a-half that has passed since Holmes's time. The simple burglar alarm, in particular, has evolved from the simplicity of wires connected to bells to complex electronic devices. One of the most common types of burglar alarms is the passive infrared detector (PIR). PIRs work by monitoring the temperature of a particular area, mainly in front of a door or window, and then detecting a change in temperature when a new object becomes present.

Another type of burglar alarm is called an ultrasonic detector. Ultrasonic detectors produce sound waves that are ultrasonic and, thus, humans cannot hear them. A moving object changes the frequencies of sound waves by interrupting their pathways through the air, and the object is detected when it moves towards or away from the detector.

Separate burglar alarms are generally controlled by a single device called a burglar alarm control panel. All motion detectors, sensors of sound waves, and infrared detectors are all managed by this panel. These are also the panels on which phone calls from the company are received in the event that one or more of the alarms goes off.

There are many types of systems offered by companies that provide more benefits to the customer than just a burglar alarm. In addition, they also provide services such as fire alarms, communication systems in case of a break-in, and video surveillance. These usually include electronic devices that are placed on a wall, sort of like a thermostat, and are used as control panels for families to activate their home's alarm system. It also acts as a telephone; when an alarm goes off, the company of the system is immediately notified and they call the family right away.

Perhaps the most successful, and well-known, company of home security systems is ADT Security Services. Based in Boca Raton, Florida, and containing branches in Canada, Latin America, and twenty-one European nations, this company features the broadest range of security devices in one affordable package. Their services are classified into three categories: video surveillance, burglar alarms, and fire alarms. Most available packages contain all three on one level or another. As the commercials advertise, service in America can be as little as $1 a day.
